'Youth murdered; girlfriend raped' newspaper clipping

The Night of the Crime

Just before midnight on Jan. 5, 1980, an unknown suspect killed 18-year-old David Krulewicz and raped David's 15-year-old girlfriend, Susan Weed.

Here is a look at some of the key locations in the murder-rape investigation — and the sequence of events that night.

The Weed Residence

Susan and David left the Salem Point neighborhood at about 7:15 p.m. to go on a date. Five hours later, Susan would find herself running home to get help for her dying boyfriend.

Bowling Alley

Susan and David began the night by hanging out at the bowling alley until a little after 9 p.m.; then they headed to a party.

Between 9 and 9:30 p.m., Susan and David drove over to Lady's Island for a “little party” David knew about.

Burger King

Between 11 and 11:15 p.m., Susan and David left the party and went to a Burger King drive-thru. They ordered a Whopper, two large fries and two medium Cokes.

When they left Burger King, they drove to Sky City, a discount store that had closed for the evening. They sat in the parking lot and talked for about 15 minutes before heading to Old Salem Road, a dirt road right outside Susan's Salem Point neighborhood.

NOTE: The road was called both Old Salem Road and Old Salem Point Road at the time. To remain consistent we chose to call it Old Salem Road throughout this project. The whole road was dirt, including the paths.

Old Salem Road

They parked on a path, about 75 feet off Old Salem Road and facing into the wooded area.

Susan later wrote that they “went to the back of the van on the couch to neck and be closer together and that’s all we did.”

At 11:45 p.m. Susan looked at her watch to check how close they were to her midnight curfew and told David, “We better be going.” They moved to the front of the van and sat with the dome light on.

Five or so minutes later, an unknown man shot into the passenger's side window of David's van, killing David.

Susan later told deputies, “We was just sitting in the van with the music and light on... All of a sudden a gunshot was fired, breaking the glass.” Susan said she started screaming and begging the man not to shoot her.

The sliding van door was opened and the suspect told Susan to get out. She offered him money. He said, "Just get out of the van and give me the money." Then he put a gun to her head. Fearing for her life, Susan gave him the $50 in her wallet.

The man led Susan farther into the wooded area, put his jacket on the ground for her to lie on and then raped her. As they walked back to the van he told her, “I’m sorry about your friend in there, but I knew that was the only way to get to you.” He told her to stay in the van until he left, then took the van keys, threw them in the road and disappeared.

When the man left, Susan asked David if he was OK. She tried to move him but he was too heavy for her. Knowing that David needed help as fast as possible, her only choice was to run home to her parents. Her mother called 911 and her father went to the scene. David Krulewicz was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:18 a.m. Jan. 6, 1980.
