More information about the data
The map and table show key 2010 financial information for short term acute care and critical access hospitals in NC.
The source for the financial data, except for the charity care costs, is the American Hospital Directory (AHD).
The source for the charity care costs is the NC Hospital Association's Community Benefits Report (NCHA).
The source for the owner's total margin is the hospital's financial audits.
AHD data are from reports filed in 2010, except for FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital, which are 2009 data.
The charity care costs from NCHA are 2010 fiscal year reports. Some hospitals' FY 2010 reports were not available and are indicated with "NA".
All hospitals on this map are non-profit, except for the following eight: Central Carolina Hospital, Davis Regional Medical Center,
Frye Regional Medical Center, Lake Norman Regional Medical Center, Martin General Hospital, Sandhills Regional Medical Center,
Washington County Hospital, Yadkin Valley Community Hospital.
Some Carolinas HealthCare System hospitals, such as MedWest-Harris, are managed, leased and/or affiliated with, and not owned by CHS.
Total margin and operating margin for Carolinas HealthCare System are for its obligated group, which includes hospitals in Mecklenburg, Cabarrus and Lincoln counties, plus the Carolinas HealthCare Foundation.
Carolinas HealthCare System provided charity care figures for many of its individual hospitals because those figures were not available from the NCHA.
The table shows total margin for each hospital and its parent company, if applicable. For example, Carolinas Medical Center-University's total margin
is 25.6% while the owner, Carolinas HealthCare System, has a total margin of 8.4%.
